Why Essay Writing is Critical in College

Essay writing is critical in college. Instructors use essays to gauge the skills students have gained in a particular course. Depending on how a student writes an article, a tutor can gauge how the specific student has captured vital concepts in the class. I wrote a personal essay describing a life-changing trip and a research paper on why individuals are hesitant to take COVID19 vaccines. In this reflection paper, I will demonstrate the skills I have gained and how I will use them in the future.
In writing my researched argument, I have learned a lot about organizing an essay and essay structure. For instance, I have known how to guide the reader to the topic with a thesis statement. In the introduction, I use catchy phrases to draw the attention of the readers to the paper. The introduction is critical because it will determine whether or not a reader will continue reading the rest of the paragraphs. In the personal essay, I started with the catchy sentence, “Without the shadow of a doubt, summers were always exciting times for us students.” Such a sentence was meant to capture the readers’ attention and put them right into the story.
At the end of the first paragraph, I needed to guide the reader using a thesis statement. The last sentence of the research paper states, “The misleading notions that COVID19 vaccines have to have microchips, they have not met safety and efficacy standards, have adverse side effects, and can alter DNA of the recipients have led to vaccine hesitancy among a section of the population.” This sentence constitutes the thesis statement, guiding the reader through what will be discussed throughout the essay.
I learned how to organize each paragraph as a single subsection of my ideas. I would begin each sentence with a topic sentence. The first sentence of each section would carry the main idea of the sentence. The other sentences in the paragraph would be supporting sentences. In the supporting sentences, I would present ideas that explain the topic sentence.
