The advanced college rhetoric class has been of great help especially in helping me improve my college writing skills. Over the course of the course, I have learned new concepts about writing which through guidance and research has helped me greatly improve the way I communicate through writing. The course objectives which entailed classes on how to use key rhetorical concepts through analyzing and composing texts gave me a new perspective in writing and learned how to tweak my content to appeal to my audience. The course also helped me develop abilities to respond to academic and non-academic situations that necessitate a purposeful shift in voice, design, medium, structure, and tone. This skill would help me to develop a new approach to information even outside academic settings which helps me draw more value from any textual content I encounter. I have also learned how to use different technologies effectively to address a diverse range of audiences. I have also learned of new several genres and the conventions for each genre and how readers and writers shape the practices and purposes of each convention. I have also developed the skill to identify stakeholders and their take on different issues and learned to critically evaluate and understand the values which inform their standpoints. In many ways, this course has equipped me with new academic tools for communicating academically and nonacademically especially in writing. To further explicate how this course has helped me improve my communication skill especially in writing, I will feature some of the works I did in the course of this course and describe how they helped me meet the course goals envisioned by the people who structured the course.
One of the articles I wrote for the course which had many valuable lessons on writing was the ‘why is the introduction paragraph important to an article?’ the article necessitated that I do research on why the introduction was a very critical part of any writing process. In my essay, I observed that ‘a good introduction paragraph is a key to connecting to the audiences and the subject should be clear as it is the road map to the rest of the article.’ this is a valuable lesson even outside the course and learning it would generally be indispensable to my academic and professional life. My research led me to understand that the primary goal of an introductory essay is to hook the audience to read the article and feature a thesis statement to give a roadmap of the rest of the article. There are several ways in which an individual can hook the audience; using statistics, anecdotes, famous quotes, etc. The introductory paragraph orients the audience with the contents of the article. I also learned some tips of writing in the introductory paragraph. One of the tips did not always write it first. You can highlight the key points you want to feature in the introductory paragraph and first write the body paragraph, in the end, you can accurately project an accurate picture of the essay having written it.
