White Settlers and the Native Americans
The relationship between White settlers and the Native Americans can be described as futile. For instance, many of the activities that were carried out by the white settlers were not desirable to the Native Americans and in some cases, led to the eruption of wars (Pabis, n.p). The White Settlers needed land for settlement, mining, and agricultural activities. Many of the lands that were possessed by the White Settlers were grabbed from the Native Americans affecting their nomadic lifestyle and the culture of owning land as a community (Pabis, n.p). Mining was a significant activity to the White settlers; however, it negatively affected the Native Americans by polluting rivers and intruding the lands that had been divided to the Natives (Pabis, n.p). In this respect, the Native Americans were displaced from their lands, forced to leave their traditions and embrace the culture of the white settlers. Therefore, such an association can also be considered to be discriminatory because the White Settlers did not accommodate the culture of the Native Americans.
Geronimo is a hero of his kind because he fought the White settlers and the troops to protect the benefits of his people that were vested in the Apache lands (“We shall remain” 7). Many of the lands that belonged to the Native Americans had been grabbed, and the Reservation measures imposed to limit the activities of the native Indians. Again, Geronimo is believed to have fought the longest; he was famous and drew fear among the Native Americans. Before, he died, he pleaded to President Roosevelt to release the Indians back to their land showing that he had valued the interests of his people. The Chiricahua Apache’s punishment is not justified because men, women, and children were punished based on who they were but not because of what they had done (“We shall remain” 15).
