Internet and Time Management
Reading 1: Martin Heidegger, "Idle Talk" in Being and Time
The question of Being was earlier considered progressive by philosophers to bring some approval to ontology, a branch of philosophy that deals with concepts of first things such as existence, identity, time, language, among others. Heidegger suggests that in today's world, the question of Being, that is why things exist, has been forgotten even though it is necessary to ask why things exist, especially time since it gave motivation to the successful researches in areas of philosophy and science, Plato and Aristotle (Heidegger 1962. p22). The question of Being is agreeable a fundamental concept because, without it, we could not have understood concepts like existence, time, Being, and becoming. It has provided us with the historical understanding of different things, and I argue that the question of Being and Time should still be given priority to continue offering people such understanding of today's different concepts such as the Internet and the use of time.
Reading 2: Adam Greenfield, "The Internet of Things"
Through his book, "The Internet of Things", Greenfields analyses the reality of an increasingly digitalized human environment. Technologies like e-learning, the Internet, and automation have played a crucial role in reshaping social change over the years. Greenfield suggests that even though technological advancement has become more integrated into our lives and seems to make work easier for us, the reality remains that technology dominates our lives. Therefore, there is a need to address both its functions and effects. However, we need to address the effects only if humans need to retain their agency and control of time in the future. The argument posed by Greenfield that technology has dominated our lives can be related to what Martin Heidegger talks about in the reading above. There is a significant visible relation between the two readings. Heidegger addresses the question of the existence of things through the subject of philosophy, called ontology, specifically time. With this field, we get to understand the concept of time and why time exists in our lives. Heidegger suggests that time should be drawn from the basic dimension of the human being (Heidegger 1962 p. 23), showing that time is an essential element of our lives.
