Introduction
Spanning is also referred to as indoor cycling and has become an effective way for people to burn unwanted calories. It was first developed in the 1980s and aimed at helping people get the experience of outdoor bicycle training and making it possible for individuals to train regardless of the weather conditions. Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc. is an equipment-based education company and is involved in providing spanning programs. These programs motivate and make it possible for individuals to work out at home and spin the bike independently. Peloton is an American company that acts as an exercise firm and media company. Peloton has developed new fitness concepts where the company combines technology, content, and best-in-class instructors to empower the community through training. The company provided love-streaming and on-demand training classes where interested individuals can participate. The company has been slammed and criticized because of its Christmas advert "The Gift That Gives Back". The video shows a woman who is given a Peloton bike as a Christmas gift by the husband. The woman then films and shares the content of her exercises with her husband. Peloton's advertisement was sexist and dystopian because it promotes beauty standards for women and is classist.
The advert is sexist because it supports beauty standards for women. The beautiful women receive a Peloton bike as a gift from the husband and are seen recording and sharing her exercises with him (Conner). Besides, the bike is demonstrated as a life-changing item where the women keep comparing her progress, and the ad ends with the couple watch her transformational journey while seated on the couch. Most critically, since the advert in the advert already appears slim and fit, the commercial creates an unrealistic attitude that would be sexist. It demonstrates that the women in society are needed to remain slim to appear attractive to men. Most critically, this advert shows and presents the women's body as an object to be looked at and admired by men. In a patriarchal society such as in Western countries, women are needed to keep analyzing their appearance; this makes women continuously struggle with their appearance (Allwood). This ad reminds women that they should measure themselves for pleasure from men.
