Regarding Something as a Game or Competition
Introduction
In Frank Bruni’s, “How to Survive the College Admissions Madness” n.d p 203, the author tries to follow the path of a number of students who want to go and study in schools with big names. He points out that a small number gets selected after selecting admission into the big schools. He continues to explain two mistakes that people make in work places. Firstly, Bruni notes that people should not pretend that is a game, of which in the real sense it is a game with losers and winners, boundaries and rules. Secondly, he identifies that working hard according to the author; no one gets promoted by working hard. He identifies factors such as strategic thinking, likability, team playing and networking as being essential to being promoted. In Stephen R. Covey, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Think Win/Win” n.d p 243, provides an approach that is important in solving problems either at a personal or professional level. The author identifies that fairness, honesty, integrity and human dignity are the principles that provide security incase people adopt to change. Additionally, he states that wisdom and power are integral in taking advantage of any opportunities available. He outlines seven habits that are interrelated in helping transforming lives. The habits are effective not only to business leaders, but also all people in the universe. There are dangers and values of viewing something as a game or completion and when an individual views an activity as a game certain factors are lost while others are gained.
In order to correctly view that something is either a game or a competition, it is important to analyze the different existing ways of solving the issue at hand. One of the characters in Bruni’s book, p 207, states that, “…you’ll take a different route to get where you want.” Literally, this means going beyond the normal way or a method that is very common among people faced with the problem with vastly different pressures and challenges placed in any human activity. Therefore, competition can be avoided and support systems and institutions that surround us should be geared up in order to help us respond to the challenges in terms of providing a wide range of skills, ideas and guidance in order to be able to choose from a range of routes in case one does not work for you. Covey states that ,p 24, “Without doubt, you have to leave the comfort zone of base camp and confront an entirely new and unknown wilderness.” In The way a person sees the world and the opportunities every challenge brings, entirely depends on the individual’s perception. The author believes that in order for change to occur to a given situation, personal change must first take place that is; an individual should change their perceptions about any human activity. Any human activity that brings a negative challenge should be viewed as challenge which is possible to overcome and not as an obstacle.
