For your final essay, you will compare the ways the graphic novel genre portrays ideologies in both V for Vendetta and Persepolis. In sum, how do these novels use the genre reveal their ideologies?
Over the next few weeks, we will be examining V for Vendetta and Persepolis in terms of how their visual elements convey, whether deliberately or not, ideology.
Consider our discussions on the concept of ideology and genre: Ideology is a deeply-rooted belief system that dictates our beliefs, worldview, values and behaviors. Comparative Analysis: Ideology and Genre in V for Vendetta & Persepolis

 

            Graphic novels are a variety of painting arts, often using a simple and exaggerated way to describe life or current affairs. Generally, use the methods of deformation, metaphor, symbol, suggestion and insinuation to convey ideas. Through the ideology conveyed by graphic novels, we are able to get a new understanding and cognition of current affairs. Ideology is affected by factors such as environment, education, and thinking ability. Different ideologies understand the same thing differently. In Persepolis, Satrapi describes the family devotes themselves to the revolution for their ideas through the perspective of a little girl. In V for Vendetta, V, under the banner of justice and freedom, used the people's desire for freedom to hate dictatorship to complete their revenge and overthrow the government of Suttler.

The main idea in both stories, V for vendetta novel and Persepolis film, remains to be the way governments apply violence to manage their citizens to scare them. This reason makes people believe that their governments are good. For instance, in both stories, the regimes are very controlling. They force their citizens to behave in particular manners, and if they don't adhere to it, they are tortured and maimed. "We didn't like to wear the veil, especially since we didn't know why we had to” (Satrapi 3). V uses force to maim all the significant government officials. Nevertheless, it is common knowledge that sometimes many governments apply force to manage its citizen. This reason is an idea that is portrayed in both the novel and the film used. They have to govern their electorates in some manner. (Satrapi 136) States that "Mom's pessimism soon won out over dad's optimism. It turned out that the Iraquis did have missiles.”
Besides, both of this novel and movie depict revolutionaries sacrificing their lives for the well-being of their nations. Obviously, every country that is undergoing a rebellion must have an individual struggling in shadows, people may not watch him, but he or she is the actual motivation for the uprising. Although people pretend as if they are not fearful of the dictatorship, they, the people, participate in rebellion when they feel they are supposed. Authorities are financially stable and can purchase every sophisticated weapon against their citizens if they weren't timid, would they require all of these armaments? No.
The other main idea in V for Vendetta and Persepolis is "Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask, there is an idea, Mr. Cready and ideas are bulletproof”-V (Moore 43).
“You showed you opposing to the regime of letting a few strands of hair show” (Satrapi, 75) this quote denotes how something such as a mask can symbolize so much more than just an individual moving around maiming people putting on this mask. The veil that V dresses and the uprising clothes the women put on signifies the idea of someone defending and rebelling against their rule because persons who see the mask or attire understand the genuine meaning many years later.
“The destruction of the bailey statue” The damage of the bailey statue is associated with the mask that the V puts on because the demolition of the bailey was another sign of individuals knowing to show an example to the rebel against the authority. In this situation, they are destructive, but it pays off because it places the administration on the check (Satrapi 69). If they could arrange for this, then what else can they perform?
