Tristran Thron: A Character Analysis
Stardust is a fantasy novel that was written by Neil Gaiman in 1999. It was a story about how Tristran Thorn, a half-faerie and half-human, set foot in his lost and unconsciously forgotten fantasy world when he fell in love with Victoria Forrester. As he fulfills Tristran’s journeys from the time he was nothing to the time he began to be something, it created changes in his character, making him an excellent candidate for a character analysis.
We will begin by examining the young Tristran Thorn. Initially, he feels like he is the odd man out. This was seen in four circumstances. First, the young Tristran seemed to be jealous of his little sister, Louisa, because she was allowed to go to the Faerie market while he was forbidden (Gaiman 30). This shows the feeling of being the “least favorite” between siblings. Second, his mother has always seemed aloof to him, as if he were a puzzle (Gaiman 31). Third, he was constantly teased by his sister for the way he looks. The sister teased about “the shape of his ears, for example (the right ear was flat against his head and almost pointed; the left one was not).” (Gaiman 31). He was also a shy lad and overcompensates by using a loud voice (Gaiman 34). Fourth, as a teen, he had uncanny daydreams that range from being an ordinary elite to rescuing princesses in the forest (Gaiman 34).
All of these demonstrate how he became distinct but peculiar at the same time. His looks seemed different from his sister’s as if they were not siblings, his behavior is offbeat, especially in front of other people, his ideations are unrealistic, and he shows soft sides that are not typical of men in a stereotypical society. However, the peculiarities are typical during teenage days, and the awkwardness is secondary to the subconscious conflicts at home and the changes in the body and perceptions of a grown man.
