Opinion Paper: The Ones Who Walk Away

Essay Instructions:

Read Essay: “The Interview” by Douglas Starr (Note: We're reading this essay to pay attention to how the writer is structuring and styling the essay. As you read, take notes on the "modes" Starr uses to explore, examine, and support his slant.
For this essay, use Ursula Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" to make a comparison to an issue you believe it illuminates in our own lives. Do some research online. For example, former students have connected the isolated child in Omelas to the children in cages at the borders. Others have compared the happiness at the expense of others to iPhones and the exploited workers who make them abroad. But be careful not to be too broad. Use the detectives report to find a narrow focus and connection--one you can create an argument/slant about.
The Radiolab Podcast offers an interesting comparison to Omelas, too. Notice how the "nihilist moment," when the citizens of Alexandria walk away into the desert is a great comparison the nihilist moment that those of Omelas have when they decide to walk away. And just look at where we are right now, with the climate change crisis, Coronovirus, the economic fallout that is occurring because of it... Are we in the middle of a "nihilist moment"?

Supported by Masud & Kari, which stated that to promote the management system of conservation within the environment, several elements are needed to be considered. They also added that local communities that support conservation of the environment and its funds to function play a significant role in it.
Slant: Ironically, even though human beings are continuously fighting with their might to fight the different environmental problems and promote conservation, human beings are still the reason for its degradation. To elaborate, people are voicing their ideals of protecting the environment as it protects the people, yet such people also break it. Human behavior has been an excellent factor for conservation, but it has proven effective as an agent of environmental problems.
Supported by Schultz, which stated in his study the four challenges in people’s behavior for environmental problems. His first argument is that people who learn a large amount of education regarding safety, conservation, or health do not precisely state that they change their behavior. He also disclosed that motivation is the tool for behavior change, so generating information alone is not enough. Second is he presented that the cognitive thinking of a person sometimes has biases.
