Symbolisms Behind Sapogonia
Sapogonia is a fictional piece of literature that focuses on several geographical and political issues that even in the current times are existing and are prominent. It illustrates relationships that exist between two nations of the world. This talks about an imaginary nation called Sapogonia may be a representation of existing countries in the world. The story deals with different issues including race and ethnicity, poverty, socioeconomic challenges, and the like, which can actually reflect the current situation that can be seen around the globe today. Hence, this paper aims to analyze and to determine the different symbolic representations of Sapogonia.
From my understanding, Sapogonia may be interpreted into different ways. It may seem to represent Latin nations that are currently existing. This seems to be a land occupied by the mestizo ethnicity. This fictional country made by Ana Castillo disregards the concept of citizenship and residency which exists in presently, but this focuses on the idea that the said country is comprised of any person that is considered a mestizo. This fictional country, Sapogonia, does not consider the current territorial borders that exist within the region of Latin America. Meaning to say, this country seems to represent any country south of the U.S. border, as long as its residents are these so-called “mestizajes” or mestizos. Another approach to interpreting this fictional nation is its non-adherence to territorial lines considering the fact that residents of Sapogonia may cross the border going to the United States, and upon crossing, they may be able to change identities, particularly of citizenship. This means to show that Sapogonia may also be a non-physical place. This can be interpreted as any place in the Americas where mestizos are residing, regardless of the geographical location. For the purpose of convenience and avoidance of misinterpretations, the remaining portions of the paper will interpret Sapogonia as a particular country located within the continent of America, which is separated from the countries located within North America.
Sapogonia was referred to by the author as a nation since it consists of residents which are known as mestizos. Sapogonia is a place south of the U.S. border with geographical, economic, social, and political features as well. Sapogonia may be referred to as a country by Ana Castillo perhaps because of migration. It comes to show that mestizos push through with the crossing of borders to reach the North of America. In the real world, this does not specifically point to a particular country in the American continent. But, this refers to the residents that are living beyond the borders of the US, particularly, within the southern part. These people are generally of the same ethnicity and race. They are very much of the same ancestry and they may have the same roots. Hence, it is just logical to represent this group of people as one single nation. Th...
