In Sunset Boulevard, the movie challenges the Romantic Project. The movie shows Joe Gills (William Holden) as attempting to be authentic in matters of love which is cheered by most of the viewers but this is being derailed by Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) who plays a major part in developing the issue that "money buys love." according to Norma, she wants to use her wealth to influence Joe into falling in love with her. Despite being broke, Joe attempts to uphold the Romantic Project by trying to demonstrate authenticity in matters of love and choosing who to love without the influence of money. However, this does not come to light as the desperate Norma eventually kills him after realizing that she has not successfully influenced him into a relationship using her money and wealth.
It all begins when a screenwriter Joe becomes broke and unable to offset his creditors who come after his car. They want to repossess his car, but Joe decides to run away where he drives into a seemingly deserted mansion where he heard a woman, Norma, calling him in mistake for someone else. This was after he had concealed his car from the creditors running after him. As he entered the mansion, Joe realizes that the woman was a film star of one time but was now almost forgotten. At the time, Norma had a script she was planning to play in an attempt to comeback in the industry, but Joe realizes that the art was abysmal and he messed up by trying to flatter her that he would amend it if she hired him as a script doctor. Norma took it seriously and insisted that he moves in her mansion. Considering the situation he was in, Joe decided to enter the mansion. Soon, learned that Norma was in depression and had even attempted suicide as reported by Max, her butler.
Norma realized Joe was broke and saw that she would take advantage of his situation to win him. She lavishes his attention by buying him expensive clothes. Soon the New Year's Eve was here, and it dawned on Joe that he had been the only guest to her. It was then that he sensed a romantic relationship with her out of his will. Because it was not his intention to fall in love with her, he decided to let her down gently, but Norma noticed quickly and slapped him eventually retreating to her room. According to Norma, Joe would not leave her and would be her lover.
Later, Joe left the mansion to visit his friend Artie Green who was enjoying his New Year Eve. Joe tries to use this opportunity to find a new place to move to when he gets out of Norma's mansion. He inquiries from Artie if he could stay at his place but he is interrupted when he meets Betty who was apparently Artie's girlfriend. He secures a place to stay in Artie's place and decides to call Max to have him pack his belongings so that he could go and pick them. It was the...
