Rodney Vega had encountered people from diverse backgrounds and religious affiliation while in the military. However, the people he despised most were those overweight like him as they appeared lazy. The writer was promoted to a sergeant and assigned to a unit of fifteen recruits considered unfit. He subsequently saw this as an opportunity to show his worth going to an extent of making crude jokes about overweight people to make himself feel better.
The sergeant’s tactics caused disquiet among the officers some who reported him for his methods and he was summoned because of complaints. The writer defended himself against accusations of flouting regulations and even as some soldiers were able to pass one, his reputation was now growing more negative even among new recruits who disliked him intensely.
