Othello
Iago was resentful and vengeful against Othello and Cassio in the play Othello. Othello was the Moorish prince in Venice who made Cassio his lieutenant, and Cassio was a young soldier whom Iago believed did not deserve to be Othello's lieutenant. Iago manipulated Othello to believe his wife Desdemona was unfaithful with Cassio, and he targeted to eliminate both Othello and Cassio. Additionally, Iago planned with Roderigo to murder Cassio, but instead, Iago collaborated with Roderigo plotting to kill the wounded Iago. Jealousy and loyalty were two of the main themes in Othello.
Othello was inflamed with jealousy after Iago deceived him that Desdemona had an affair and smothered her bed in a jealous rage. The Moor made rash decisions and later found out that he had been tricked into killing his wife, who loved him faithfully. In despair, he kills himself. Jealousy affects the people's decision-making, and Iago is jealous of Cassio and Othello, which causes him to plot murder for being overlooked as Othello's lieutenant. The theme of jealousy shows that those who think they are betrayed make reckless decisions that endanger others. Iago told himself that "I put the Moor At least into a jealousy so strong" (Act 2, Scene 1 lines 307-311). Iago understood that Othello's jealousy would build his judgment, and this foreshadowed that uncontrollable jealousy was linked to the theme of revenge.
The theme of loyalty was contrasted with betrayal and revenge in Othello and where Cassio and Desdemona were two of the most loyal characters who got betrayed. Act 3, Scene 3 ended with Iago being made Othello's lieutenant and stated to Othello: "I am your own forever." As such, Othello expected that all the people whom he appointed would be trusting and faithful. Cassio remained loyal to Othello even when Iago set him up that he got drunk in public and was demoted. Likewise, Brabantio expected that his daughter Desdemona would be obedient and loyal to him and Desdemona was devoted to Othello regardless of what he went through.
Shakespeare seemed to have explored the theme of jealousy, focused on the marriage and the extent to which the soldiers were trusting and loyal. Othello let jealousy affect his reasoning as he felt aggrieved by Cassio and Desdemona that he vowed revenge against them for their supposed betrayal.
