Stereotypes of People with Tattoos
Tattoos have earned various stereotypes in society. Some people seem to have high levels of intelligence by executing judgments on people with tattoos. Consequently, having ink marks is, to some people, related to a broken norm. Many people have faced the wrath of people around them based on their physical appearance. However, the question arising from the stereotypes is the main issue or impact of tattoos in society. Most people cannot answer the question and the ideas remain unrealistic to the tattooed individuals. Different people undergo tattooing for various reasons and judging the decisions negatively cannot undo the appearance. This paper will draw on examples from the movies Red Dragon and The Place Beyond the Pines to showcase the various stereotypes often bestowed on people with tattoos while also showcasing their shallowness.
Tattooing is often associated with prisoners or people who have been to prison. The fact is that not all people who have tattoos are prisoners. Judging individuals from such a perspective is wrong. To some people, tattooed individuals used to be normal before the action and this line of thought affects various relationships (Jackson). “Tattoos are becoming more popular today than they ever were before” (Barret). Most college students have tattoos and parents misunderstand their children by relating the sign with the situation of being rebellious. It’s obvious that the assumption is wrong and dwelling on the misconception could affect the victims and lead to reactions resulting in the ideal condition described. Not all people with tattoos are prisoners or have been to prison. It is possible that the media, especially, the movie industry has been propagating the sentiments above. In a movie titled The Place Beyond the Pines, Ryan Gosling features as Luke and his body is covered in tattoos. From the tattoos and the movie’s storyline, it is obvious that at one time, he had been in prison. Some of the tattoos on his body include spider-webs, letters on knuckles, as well as a dagger dripping blood. These are scary tattoos that are often associated with prisoners. This furthers the idea that tattoos are for prisoners or people who have been to prison.
The society has associated tattoos with the lack of professionalism in the job market. According to Jackson, getting an ideal job proportional to academic qualifications is not dependent on outward appearance. Although tattoos might have been an issue in the past, modern society does not find anything wrong with the look (Barret). This ignorance might have an association with the fact that significant populations of people in the current generation have tattoos and dwelling on the issue would result in gaps in the important position that could only get be occupied by the victims. Barret states a major claim that as long as a tattoo is not covering the entire face, then finding a job should not pose a challenge. However, one could engage a trick by covering the tattoo during the search for employment and then show it up after getting the desired position (Jackson). Various people have served senior positions with similar looks. Hence, tattoos are not a stum...
