What is media concentration and why is it a threat to democracy? Draw upon relevant key terms and social theory to explain your answer
Media concentration is the aspect of having a few individuals or corporations own or control mass media (Barnett, 2). This means that these individuals control what an entire country knows or should know with regards to events happening in the country. In a democracy, the interests of the people must always come before those of a few individuals. However, media concentration is a challenge to democracy because it helps to drive the narrative as seen or from the perspective of a few individuals. Media concentration ignores the bill of rights and only seeks to promote the agenda of a few. Aside from democracy, it is a challenge to professional journalism whose sole purpose is to provide people with credible news (Dohnanyi & Moller, 16).
The most appropriate social theory to help explain media concentration and its threat to democracy is the conflict theory. The conflict theory reveals how the so-called ‘elite’ control the weak and the poor. It is possible for the weak and poor to be controlled through the information that they are fed with. So, media concentration is simply a leeway for the rich and powerful to exert their influence and control over the meek.
