The internet is often described as a blessing and a curse. Through it, the world has managed to propel forward developmentally and backward in other aspects. Currently, billions of people all over the world are connected and could converse or even engage in business activities without the need for physical contact. Everyone has embraced the Internet, including teenagers. However, not everyone is using it to better themselves or to find new markets for their products. Social media has also been positively impacted and people are now connected through the various platforms. However, one sad emerging issue and one that has often led to numerous debates is sexting. Sexting can be simply explained as the act of sending sexually explicit messages or sexually revealing images. This habit has taken root among teens and with its ties to bullying/harassment as well as sexual assault in high schools, it is only fitting that it be addressed. However, instead of blaming the teens, the society needs to ask itself how it has contributed to cultivating this issue and whether there are direct ties to it and some of the stereotypes societies hold.While deeply assessing teen sexting, this article seeks to build a case against the current societies and the stereotypes which are often viewed or believed to be normal.
Currently, teenagers want to live online and will spend most of their days chatting or sharing their life with their friends on social media. People have grown comfortable with documenting their lives online without realizing that whichever message or photo they post could be a trending topic in a matter of minutes. There are some people who have become famous while seated and others who have been shamed without their knowledge. Social media has made a lot of things possible and the new normal of wanting to be online all the time could have its negative repercussions. Teens are quite energetic and will take up any new idea and apply it in their lives without thinking of the consequences. The above explains why a majority of them sext or are comfortable sending their nude pictures to prospective boyfriends. What many of them fail to realize is the fact that everything they do online can often be used against them.
