Schools Should Not Require Student Uniforms
The debate on school uniforms has been around for quite some time. Several researchers have given out their opinions arguing for the need of uniforms and others arguing against school uniforms. In my view, school uniforms will increase the burden of cost to the parents as they shall have to purchase the uniforms. It will lead to student misbehavior as they seek to differentiate themselves. Also, forcing students to wear uniforms that they don’t want will result in discomfort in a school environment which eventually will affect their academic performance. This paper will prove these points accordingly.
Firstly, the introduction of student uniforms to schools will increase the burden of education cost on the parents. The introduction of uniform will require that the parents buy their students one or two pairs of uniforms for school. Those who have more than one child in school will incur extra costs in buying them the school uniforms (Procon Organization 3). Also, the purchase of the uniforms will require that parents buy their children both civilian clothes and school uniforms. This will be an additional cost unlike in the current situation where the cost of the two is combined into one as students can wear civilian clothes to school and also wear them at home. Moreover, the requirement of school uniform will disadvantage those with poor backgrounds as they can only achieve to purchase one uniform unlike the other students from rich families who can manage to buy more than one uniform (Barbara 4). In a way, this will lead to social differentiation of students in a school a factor which may affect their school performance. The idea of school uniforms should not be adopted.
