Rhetorical Analysis Paper -- Looking at How to Build an Argument
Your rhetorical analysis paper is a 4-5 page paper in which you analyze how effectively and or ineffectively an author of an article uses different rhetorical strategies to craft their argument.
For this paper, you’ll be analyzing any ‘Opinion’ section article from the Stony Brook Statesman (or from their Opinions Section archives published anytime on or after April 1st 2021).
You can find these articles at: sbstatesman.com/category/opinions/ Please make sure to save the article name, link, and date.
There will be sample papers provided in the coming classes to demonstrate more clearly the types of persuasive strategies you should focus on for analyzing. For now, however, you can use these points below as guidelines for what to start analyzing. For whatever piece you choose, you should ask yourself the following questions:
● What is the topic?
● What is the main (major) argument? (Think implied or stated thesis)
○ Is there a clear thesis to be quoted here? If so, what is it? For example: “Local Long Island municipalities need to do much more to help curb beach trash pollution.”
○ If there isn’t a clear thesis, should there be one? What could it be? Why and where should the author include such a statement?
● Who is the audience? Does the author seem to address any groups of readers in particular? Should they? Why or why not?
● What arguments does the author make to support their main (major) argument?
○ How effective are these arguments? Why? What argumentative techniques do you
notice, like word choice, examples, etc.?
● Are there any counter arguments included? Should there be? Which ones specifically?
Where? Why?
○ If not, should some be included? Why?
● What more could have helped make the author’s argument more convincing?
● What other techniques/strategies do you notice here? Visual? Formatting? Linguistic?

A lesson on the knowledge of a game usually comes with an analogy that we have to walk a mile in someone else shoes to know what actually should be done. The Stony Book University's “The Statesman article addresses a baseball team that is denied of the championship. The game refers to a bat and ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns to battle and the field. The game came about due to the bat and ball games that evolved in England around the mid-18th century. The modern version of the game was developed in the Northern part of America by the immigrants. The Stony Brook baseball team had momentum on its side, was repudiated an option to clutch an "NCAA" Match. Since there had been unfavorable weather situations, the “Seawolves’” round game of the championship had to be postponed, finally receiving cancellation. In the article, fate is effectively used to determination of ones’ future life. For example, environmental techniques are implored when the final game was called off due to the excess rains. This gives the readers a bad attitude towards rain falling during the day.
. The author narrates how the Stony Brook baseball team lost the opening match. Even though they had been beaten in the beginning, never did the players lose hope. Still, they continued with the fight. After the first loss into the match to the Marine Black Bears, the Stony Brook team continues to defeat the Albany Great Danes (para. 1). With the win, they retaliated their first loss. Their opening loss did much more than explain where the author's inspiration for this discussion originated. The author normalized the conversation by framing the story this way.
The story is developed in a very casual manner to address the target audience, baseball players, and any other game. In the article, the author addresses the first loss as a disappointment to the team, where later, their hopes of lifting the trophy are renewed after managing to beat the Albany Great Danes. “The long ball really killed us today, obviously. I’m sure he would like to have those pitches back, but his effort was tremendous.” Said the Stony Brook’s head coach. The team comprises young, dynamic individuals and players who thrive on making ends meet for the entire team. Players are advised not to lose hope until the final whistle is blown if fate allows (para. 3). The author seems to be addressing the players of any game in particular. Such an address is termed necessary as it motivates the players despite the fate. After the loss, the Stony Brook players looked a little bit motivated right from the first game, thus strengthening their squad and came back stronger.
The author made an artistic choice at the beginning of the article that later positively impacted the message's overall message. The author narrates how the championship trophy was taken away from the Stony Brook Baseball team. After enjoying the tournament from beginning to end, the award is fatefully taken away from them due to bad weather. The team's method of establishing its credibility was quite effective. They accepted that they didn't know much when they lost their first game. In...
