Mary Shelley and the “Frankenstein”: A Biographic Similarity
“Frankenstein” or, “The Modern Prometheus” by an English author Mary (Wollstonecraft) Shelley (1797-1851, is a horror-themed novel published in 1818 and narrates the life of a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, and his creation of a sapient creature in one of the most unorthodox scientific experiments (Shelley). Shelley was a daughter of a radical philosopher, William Godwin (1756-1836), and a leading English feminist and writer, Mary Wollstonecraft (1959-1797). Shelley’s mother died barely a month after her birth and was raised by Mary Jane Clairmont, Godwin’s second wife who loved her children more than Shelley. It is this form of favoritism that Clairmont expressed towards her children that Shelley felt rejected and unloved in her life (Mellor). Mary Shelley was later sent to Scotland to be with her friends until 1814 but could occasionally visit London. It is during this time that she nurtured her literary talent and was free from her stepmother’s mistreatment (Shelley). The story features themes that have gained increased interest such as child upbringings, the quest for secrets of life, and the questions of whether life could be isolated or created as seen in many science and fiction works of literature. Like Frankenstein, the creation of Victor Frankenstein, the novel is a biographic similarity of Mary Shelley’s life depicting an unloved and abandoned child who dreadfully scuffles to be included in a loving and caring family.
Examining Mary Shelly’s writing career, it is critical to understand what went through as far as writing Frankenstein, her novel, especially as it bears a striking similarity to her book and how her life led to her to write the masterpiece.
