Critique on Frankenstein
“Am I to be thought the only criminal when all humankind sinned against me?” (Shelley). This line is from the famous 1818 novel Frankenstein written by the English author, Mary Shelley. Frankenstein is known for Victor Frankenstein, a passionate and hardworking scientist who had discovered the secret of life, leading to the creation of an eight-foot-tall hideous monster. This paper will discuss the worthiness of Frankenstein as a classic piece of literature with themes that strongly relate to humanity, making it more than just pop-fiction or late-night bedtime stories.
Personal critique on Frankenstein
I see Frankenstein as significantly ahead of its time, considering it was made in 1818. It is rightful to be called The Modern Prometheus. There is so much more about the novel that reveals relatable themes of being human such as ambition, relationships, and nature, which are more profound than the horror aspect of the novel.
The power of man and his ambitions is something that is a timeless subject in the novel. It applies to our modern technological advancements in various fields, enabling man to do things that are only deemed impossible in the past, but there are consequences that humanity should be aware of, just like what happened to Victor Frankenstein and his monster.
The importance of human relationships and their power in shaping an individual is evident in the novel for both Victor Frankenstein and his monster. Victor Frankenstein chose to value science more than his relationships with other people, which pushed him into insanity. On the other hand, the monster is isolated because of society’s view of him even though he wants to love and be loved. The monster receives inhumane treatment from man and even from his creator. “I, the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on.” (Shelley). The monster felt lonely because even though he is alive, he did not have anyone to spend his life with, and even his request to have someone similar to him was not granted.
