Essay #2: Source Collection and Analysis:
For the first assignment, we focused on understanding the complexities of argument and learning to recognize elements of arguments in written texts. We have observed that conversations surrounding Cultural Diversity occur in a variety of fields and, subsequently, concern many different topics. For Essay 2, you will collect 5-10 sources on a topic related to cultural Diversity. You will then use these sources to create an Annotated Bibliography, which will include the MLA citation for each source, as well as a 1-2 paragraph annotation that summarizes and analyzes each source.
Your essay should identify similarities and/or differences in each article's argument in order to discover what those similarities or differences might represent, reveal, or demonstrate. Successful essays will discuss elements of ethos, pathos, and logos.
Purpose:
The purpose of Essay 2 is to further develop your research and critical thinking skills as you begin to work with multiple sources. More specifically, Essay 2 encourages you to more readily identify similarities and differences in multiple arguments and to translate those observations into insightful and sophisticated discussions of the elements of those arguments through in-depth and thorough analyses.
Considerations:
Try to find sources that discuss a topic that you are passionate about. Remember, these smaller essays are meant to help you build up to the research paper that you will write later in the semester. Focus on analyzing and evaluating each author's arguments; you are not taking a stance on Cultural Diversity at this point. Your rhetoric should be more “truthseeking” than “persuasion” based.
Specifics and Worth:
Citation – Include a properly formatted Works Cited Page and incorporate direct quotes with appropriate in-text citations.
Length – 2-3 pages

"Diverse, Sheer Opposite, Antipodes”: Diversity, Opposition, and Community in Romantic Culture." European Romantic Review 20.2 (2009): 139-158. Retrieved on 25th March 2018 from /doi/abs/10.1080/10509580902840426 In this article, the author notes the relevance of romantic and pragmatic marriages in the society. He defines romantic marriage as one involving two more people who become friends and physically attracted to each other (Cox, 139). The two choose to marry from their own free will and choice. Pragmatic marriages on the other hand are made possible by formal procedures of family and group politics. The article further identifies it as a form of arranged marriage. The article is useful as it shows the difference between a union that supports a person’s human right of freedom and one that doesn’t. Efemini, Esther. "Till Death Do Us Part: Forced Marriages In The UK." Criminal Justice Matters 79.1 (2010): 14-15. Accessed 25th March 2018 from /publications/cjm/article/til-death-do-us-part-forced-marriages-uk The article notes the idea of marriage as perceived by the western world. It shares that most “Western” countries advocate for romantic marriages which involve individual choices by the couples. The West considers all other forms of marriage as legal. Furthermore, the article mentions that in the West most marriages are legally bound with legal certificates issued. The idea is to make divorcing difficult due to the efforts required to end a marriage legally. In this article, the significance of romantic marriages that support individual freedom is emphasized. In addition, it highlights the importance of binding the unions legally. Delia Furtado. Does Culture Affect Divorce Decisions? Evidence from European Immigrants in the US.
