Reflection of the Film To Live
To Live, directed by Zhang Yimou, the film gives a melancholic and rather comic history of great China's cultural revolution from the era of nationalists of the early 40s through to the communist regime that became dominant in the 70s. The film features a once-wealthy family comprising Fugui, his wife Jiazhen, and their children. Fugui, an addicted gambler, squanders his family's fortunes through persistent gambling, including a house that they had inherited from his parents. Despite constant reminders by his wife to quit gambling and focus on raising their kids and living a quiet life, Mr. Fugui was adamant on his stance about gambling, at one point arguing that quitting it at once could even kill you. I could not help but sympathize with him. He was treated like a prince in his hometown during his gambling days, while fellow gamblers siphoned all his fortunes through the activity.
I was relieved that the revolution that led to the takeover of China by the communists from the nationalists became a blessing in disguise for Fugui. The house that he had lost due to his gambling habits was burnt down by the communist regime, while he transitioned into survival mode as an entertainer, courtesy of the winner of his house, who had gifted him with beautiful shadow puppets. The nationalist army was one of the most esteemed clients of Fugui's new street entertainment career before the communist regime completely took over the country. The red army, representing the communist army, eventually came to the rescue of Mr. Fugui and helped him on his way back home to his wife and children. His wife had lived a quiet life that she once desired and had also chosen a survival mode to earn a living by doing water delivery. It saddened me that the frustration caused by Fugui's past behavior left her daughter to battle with illness that caused her deafness and rendered his son, a young and ambitious boy, with huge challenges to overcome.
