Leadership and management are essential components in running nonprofit organizations. Golensky and Hager (2020) indicate that they are fundamental for ensuring the smooth operations of these facilities while utilizing the scarce resources they often receive through donations and state and federal financing. In this activity, I chose to interview the different leadership dynamics of a nonprofit nursing home – The Williams Home, Inc. I contacted the administrator to request permission to interview one of the senior employees on 16th September 2022. He was very excited about the interview after learning that it was part of a graduate course requirement to expose learners to gerontology leadership and management. He even prompted me to feel comfortable asking questions and conduct a follow-up through him in case of any clarifications. The exercise was insightful because it assisted me in gaining awareness about the routine management of the facility and the central leadership traits that distinguish the various staff members.
Nurse K was a visibly jovial and outspoken respondent. She was comfortable with a skype meeting that took place in the evening hours from 6.30 PM to 7.15 PM. Her responses were straightforward and elaborate, illustrating her expertise and experience of over 18 years of caring for elderly populations in different contexts. She mentioned that she has been working as the nursing director in the institution for over five years and acts as the administrator’s right-hand individual. One could tell that she is enthusiastic about Williams Home based on her confidence while describing the institution. She indicated that it was started in 1941 by James Luther Williams to care for aging women of 55 years and beyond. The facility lies on approximately 6 acres in Lynchburg, Virginia’s finest region. She divulged that although its growth was hampered by World War II temporarily in the 1940s, it later gained momentum to become an institution of prestige.
The respondent underscored that Williams Home is a nonprofit facility whose primary mission is to provide older women with a home-like setting complemented by services, care, and amenities that prioritize their security, comfort, and friendship. She also indicated that their goal is to improve the quality of life of the elderly by making joy a commonplace feeling in their lives and keeping them as active as they desire. The institution recognizes the sensitive needs of the aging population. As a result, nurse K. emphasized the facility is optimized to create a serene and supportive environment for this aging category. It also tailors its environment to satisfy its unique individual needs since it targets women. This element has led to the different care levels that enable the staff to promote assisted and independent living for its residents. It was interesting to learn that the facility is flexible and provides the beneficiaries with occasional out-of-the-institution events. Thus, the goal is to give holistic care to its group.
