The rate of Asian Americans in San Francisco dying from COVID-19 is alarming. The authors of the article seek to illustrate that racism is to blame for the high disturbing rates. The COVID-19 wave has led to fears among Asian Americans, given that those who test positive for the virus are perceived negatively by other people in San Francisco. The lack of adequate support and provision of information from the government has played significant roles in the high prevalence of the disease among Asian American communities in San Francisco. The rate of national tracking data on the number of deaths among Asian Americans has been poor, meaning the exact number of people who have died from COVID-19 is unknown. The health officials in San Francisco only provide COVID-19 statistics in terms of "Asian Americans" rather than breaking them into various ethnic groups. This has resulted in most of them being in the dark regarding which Asian ethnicity, either Chinese, Japanese, Korean Americans, or others, have significantly been affected to ensure necessary safety measures.
There has been no effort from government agencies to provide COVID-19-related information in Asian Native languages. As a result, most Asian Americans do not have the necessary information regarding concepts such as testing, social distancing, and other safe ways to curb the spread of coronavirus. In essence, language barriers have significantly affected the ability of Asian Americans to access information on COVID-19 as well as hampered their communication with health officials and providers. Additionally, the false misconception that Asian Americans in San Francisco are wealthy has limited them from being provided with the necessary support to help fight COVID-19.
