Propriety in Social Media: For Better or for worse?
- I. Introduction
- Sense of propriety today is more emphasized because of the popularity of social media (Van Dijck)
- Through social media propriety is supported by most people, while anything against it is shunned (Van Dijck)
- Thesis Claim: “Too much emphasis on propriety lessens the people’s creativity, thus social media lessens creativity”
- II. What is Propriety
- Propriety is the social conventions and norms which are deemed as the guidelines, where everyone should follow
- Disobedience to these “arbitrary” rules that were set, such as discourtesy to elderly, are then sanctioned by established rules of law or by unconventional ones (ex. Shaming in social media outlets)
- III. Argument
- Claim 1: Social Media creates a homogeneity of ideals and beliefs (Arias)
- i. Homogeneity is caused by the effect that social media and lack of borders on social norms
- ii. These social norms affect how we perceive and think of things that happen around us, thus influencing our ideals and beliefs
