Portrayal and Role of Women in “Heart of Darkness
”Heart of Darkness his a novel that shows the discussion of problematic topics regarding the reality of life. In its fiction lies the narrative and its portrayal of racism and sexism. Both themes are intertwined with the connection of women’s lives. The intention of this essay is to find the points and issues of personalization and characterization to show how ultimately sexist and at the same time realism about women in society. Heart of Darkness is able to imbue its story with a degree of realism as it reflects others aspects about the designs of humans and society.
One character is Marlow’s Aunt. She reflects one who is submissive and ready to support the will of the men. She is also a very condescending and racist person. Marlow was generally able to find himself in the heart of Africa because of his aunt. The aunt was the one who inspired by perceiving Marlow’s appointment to the company as an opportunity to educate people about the wonder of the Western World. She believes that Marlow will be one who will spread truth and progress, shedding light place in the world. In one instance in the story, Marlow tells his aunt
“It’s queer how out of touch with truth women are. They live in a world of their own . . . ."(Conrad, 27)
This statement is reflective of Marlow’s own emotions and behaviour toward women, especially his aunt and later, his fiancé. This view is seemingly shared by Kurtz. Kurtz reflects this perspective in a statement that he made regarding women. ,
“We must help them to stay in that beautiful world of their own, lest ours gets worse." (Conrad, 32)
