The US announced that it was suspending its arms control accord with Russia citing failure by the latter to honor it. Trump administration is seeking to enter into a new treaty that would have other nuclear states such as China, India, North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan brought on board. Recently, the US began developing long-range weapons.
The events in this story are more consistent with realism than liberalism. The suspension of the arms control accord by the US is consistent with the realist notion that countries are in pursuit of their national interests. In the article, it is evident that the US and Russia are pursuing their own interests despite there being a treaty that is against such moves.
February 4, 2019: Many European nations recognize Guaido as Venezuelan president (Baczynska and Rodríguez, Reuters)
Many countries in the European Unions joined the US in supporting Juan Gaido, Venezuela’s opposition leader, as the country’s interim president. The country’s sitting leader, Nicolas Maduro, who has overseen a declining economy, disregarded the sentiments of the European countries. China and Russia have invested heavily in the country and are against foreign intervention.
This is consistent with liberalism given that many countries have come together to pursue a common goal for the nation. Therefore, there is international cooperation that aims to bring peace to the country. This is consistent with liberalism.

The US is communicating directly with Venezuela’s military urging them to defect from Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorial regime. The US is planning to impose new sanctions, adding to the ones already in place against the top officials in the regime. The sanctions aim at pressurizing the sitting leader to accept a democratic transition.
This is consistent with liberalism because the aim is to bring peace and revive the economy, which is on its knees. The US is seeking the possibility of cooperation and peace, which are core concepts of liberalism. Therefore, liberalism describes better the events in the story.

The US Senate Committee began an investigation into meetings between top officials in Obama administration, Maria Butina, and Alexander Torshin, a Russian central banker that sought to influence foreign policy. The Senate committee is seeking more information regarding the 2015 meetings that took place between the above-mentioned parties. The lawmakers pointed out that Butina and Torshin, both Russians, managed to gain access to top government officials responsible for the monetary and economic policy in the US.
