Lying has always been considered one of the worst things man can ever do. It’s safe to say that many people tell a lie, and choose to hide the truth from the others for personal benefits or advantages. Sometimes their situation may be uncertain, and it urges them to tell a lie, and some people are actually habitual of lying because they find it easy to escape from the uncertainties by hiding the facts. The human history is full of plays and movies that depict the same concept in a beautiful and impressive way, leaving long-lasting impacts on the minds of people. The Crucible is one of those very few plays in which the narrator has dared to unfold the bitter realities of the society, convincing the audience that there is no alternative to telling the truth. Arthur Miller presented this 1953 play. It is a partially fictionalized and dramatized story of the Salem witch trials. In the 17th century, people living in the Massachusetts Bay Colony were given tough times. The Government of the United States accused various people of being communists. Miller was able to understand their feelings as he was also at the target of the government and the cops. He was questioned about his integrity and had to face a lot of problems. With The Crucible, Arthur Miller decided to take a stand and reveal what the consequences of lying could be, proving that honesty is the best policy and that people should not tell a lie even when the situation is not in their favor since it will undoubtedly destroy their lives or their families’ lives in the long run.
The Examples of Lies from The Crucible
In order to prove his point of view and to make people understand that telling a lie can never solve their problems, Arthur Miller created some characters in The Crucible that were into controversies, and they chose to hide the truth. The first character that draws our attention in this regard is that of Abigail Williams. She is clearly the villain of this play, a selfish and arrogant lady who is into creating a mess for others in one way or the other. It looks like Abigail is habitual of telling a lie, meaning she cannot live without manipulating her friends and the whole town. Some of her acts are quite odd, sending nearly 20 innocent people to their deaths. Williams is the former servant of Elizabeth and John Proctor. During the first two acts, it is shown that she is always busy with her work, and tries to hide her love affair with John Proctor. When Elizabeth gets to know about her intentions, she kicks Abigail out of the house in no time, but Williams, being an arrogant, selfish and negative-minded lady, does not care of anyone. She is in love with John but gradually realizes that John is no more interested in her. In the meantime, the relationship between John and Elizabeth changes, and she does not care about him anymore. Elizabeth and Abigail have a mutual dislike, but the feelings of Abigail are stronger than that of Elizabeth’s affection. “It's a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman” (Act 1, p. 11). She calls Elizabeth a lying, sniveling and cold lady, but the truth is that she is herself a selfish and bitter lady. ...
