Assignment Overview
For your third essay assignment, in lieu of a more traditional essay, you will complete a project to accompany our reading and discussion of Daniel Wallace’s novel, Big Fish.
This project is comprised of two parts:
Part I (50 pts): First, research a current cultural figure and write three tall tales about his or her life. Each tale should be based on their biography but should use hyperbole to characterize your chosen figure. In addition, be sure to use other various literary elements as appropriate in order to shape a specific theme.
Part II (50 pts): Then, write a soo-word critical analysis of the literary elements found within your tall tales analyzing how they create or enhance your theme. Be sure to explain the research you did on your chosen figure and cite your sources in this analysis.
Minimum Requirements
In order to be eligible to earn a passing grade, your project must meet the following minimum requirements:
• 1000-1200 words long:
o Part I (three tall tales) - 500 words o Part II (critical analysis) - 500 words
• MLA document format and citations - a Works Cited page and in-text citations are required for Part II
• Part II (critical analysis) must incorporate source material from three secondary sources

* A project with any degree of plagiarism may automatically receive a failing grade.

• Part II (critical analysis)...
o Makes a compelling interpretive argument grounded in textual analysis, and avoids excessive summary
o Effectively incorporates source material from secondary sources as support o Is logically and coherently organized, and includes organizational signposts such as a clear thesis statement, specific topic sentences, and strong transitions o Has been revised, proofread, and edited, and is written in a formal tone o Correctly utilizes literary present tense and academic third person
o Adheres to the conventions of MLA Style, 8th edition, including formatting, document set-up, Works Cited page, and in-text citations

Paul Bunyan
One famous cultural figure in Northern America among the workers that cut down trees is Paul Bunyan. He was recognized for his strength, skills, and speed. He was born in Northern America, the state of Maine. Pauls' parents were astonished at first sight because he was huge at birth. A t about two weeks after birth, Paul Bunyan weighed more than forty kilograms. He always complained of hunger, and his parents supplied milk from ten cows to feed him. According to Mai (26), the young boy started consuming fifty eggs and ten two-kilogram containers of potatoes in a day. This extraordinary eating style surprised many people who knew of him, as the info spread across the country speedily.
One day, Paul Bunyan rolled over in his bed and caused an earthquake. His parents did not know how to handle him. They thought he was extraordinary. The earthquake cause chaos in the neighborhood, and his parents were reported to the authorities. They were summoned, and after the hearing of both parties, the community versus his parents, the government agreed that the baby and his parents relocate. His parents were frightened but had no other choice but to obey the government ruling.
Pauls' father decided to build a wooden bed for the baby. He placed the bed onto the water along the coastal region of the city. Every time the baby rolled over, massive waves would cover the seaside town. His parents opted to him back to land and took him to the woodlands. It is in the woods that he grew to a huge energetic man. Wiebe (129) agrees with other authors that as he grew up in the woods, he helped his father in cutting down trees, and his father observed that he had a lot of energy that can amount to that of ten men. Paul was very energetic and faster than his father. Back at home, the boy would switch off the lights and jump into his bed before the apartment got dark.
Maine is known to be extremely cold for about three-quarters of the twelve months. On a particular day, snow started covering their home, which was now near the woods. The snow was very different; it was blue rather than usual white snow. The abnormal snow covered the forests. On the sight of all the snow, Paul decided to walk around. He saw an animal that was stuck on the snow, and he decided to rescue it. He picked up the animal and placed it near the fireplace at his home. The animal got warmed, but his hair remained blue. Paul named the blue Ox babe. He kept it with another animal in a small building. He, however, observed that the animal grew more prominent every day.
As Paul grew in the southeastern part of the United States, the woodlands were filled with massive thick trees. Paul would walk around the dense forests and clear the trees with one stroke of his sharp axe. Babe was in his company and was very helpful. For instanc...
