A Pair Of Tickets: Who Is Jing Mei?

Essay Instructions:

Assignment: Your task is to write a five paragraph characterization essay about the narrator in the short story of “A Pair of Tickets” by Amy Tan in our textbook. The first step to approach this assignment is to conduct a detailed analysis of this character by paying attention to those six areas: look (physical), speech (verbal), action (behavioral), thought (psychological), interaction (relational), and feeling (emotional). The second step is to categorize all the details in those areas into some groups by using either negative or positive traits like honesty, generosity, understanding, or stupidity. The next step is to select three traits using adjectives, nouns or descriptive phrases which you can best apply to the narrator – these are traits that the narrator possesses. You will organize the body of your essay around these three traits. Alternatively, you may also focus on one important aspect of this narrator, for instance, the psychological aspect, to interpret the personal qualities through inner activities and changes that correspond to some outside forces.
Heading: Standard MLA and an interesting and creative title
Introduction: In this first paragraph, you will introduce your character. Use an anecdote, a telling quote or incident from the story, or a summary of how the character changes throughout the story to engage your reader. Be sure to include your thesis statement, which is the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. This sentence will inform the reader what he or she will read in your essay. The thesis should include your comment on the narrator and those 3 adjectives or nouns or descriptive phrases, which will be used separately in the topic sentences in the body paragraphs.
Three Body Paragraphs: Each of those three traits in your thesis will be used to describe your character in the topic sentences of the body paragraphs. You will support the topic sentences with two to three quotes from the story. Your quote must be cited in MLA format. Make sure you explain the connection between the examples and the traits.
Conclusion: Restate your thesis statement, but make sure you reword it. Provide some final thoughts about the character. This is the last paragraph your teacher reads, so make it good (5-6 sentences).
Quotation Requirements: You must include the page number of the quotation and introduce or lead in the quotation properly. For example: When discussing Mrs. Dubose’s attitude, Atticus informs Jem, “She’s an old lady and she’s ill. You just hold your head high and be a gentleman” (100). (Notice how I introduced the quotation, where I put the quotation marks, and how I noted the page number.)
