Nick or Gates?
The question pertains to The Great Gatsby story and actually it is more of Nick because he lists down all the attendees of the party that summer. The list includes all of the powerful and rich people in the nation. After that, he gives a description of a trip he took going to New York with Gatsby to have lunch. While they are driving through the city, Nick listens to Gatsby talk about what happened to him in the past even if it is an inappropriate story. For instance, Gatsby says that he has wealthy parents who originated from the Midwest. When asked by Nick where in the Midwest he comes from, Gatsby says that he is from San Francisco.
After telling his story, Gatsby makes a list of what he has accomplished so far and boasts that he went to Oxford, went on hunting trips, collected jewels from Europe, received medals during the war. Gatsby notices that Nick is skeptical about what is saying and brings a photo of his cricket days at Oxford.
Even if Nick thinks that Gatsby’s stories are about endless stories of hope about the future, Chapter 4 is mostly about questioning Gatsby’s past. The manner of how Gatsby spoke about his past to Nick causes skepticism, and even if everything seems far-fetched, he is able to prove them.
