What can literature teach us about "the meaning of life," or how can studying literature help us find better ways of creating meaning in our lives?
In “The meaning of life," Terry Eagleton, looks into whether the question is meaningful and what people understand as "meaning" and "life" and whether the question is peculiar to today’s society. There is a deeper meaning to life, other than merely existing, and understanding one’s purpose for their existence is worthwhile. Eagleton goes beyond the practice of focusing on life from a religious or theological perspective. Thus, there are different perspectives abut the question since from a religious point of view there are built-in meanings in the universe and life is sacred and one can discover the meaning of life when they are more spiritual and religious. Even when literature does not answer the question directly they imply that life is whatever makes it worth living.
Meanings are ascribed or inherent and sometimes life is what we believe is important in our lives. According to Eagleton (10) “Since our grammar allows us to construct nouns, which represent distinct entities”. Meaning is linked to the choice and matter of language, such that the way people interpret the meaning of life depends on the context (Eagleton10). Thus, the way people ask about the meaning of life, the language they use and construct what is important in their lives is reflected in their choice of language and how they interpret the meaning of life.
There is no consensus on what meaning of life means, but those who dismiss the question as a metaphysical illusion err as there is focus on relativism. One cannot simply choose to understand the meaning of life as though they are in a vacuum and claim that they understand is the bes...
