One of the most beautiful stories of the 21st century has been the success and positive impacts of globalization. People can move around quite easily and live virtually anywhere across the globe. This has spurred an increase in the growth of cosmopolitan regions, with natives freely mingling with immigrants or visitors. The catch, however, usually comes in the integration process of these immigrants. The process of integration to a new surrounding can sometimes be quite daunting for anyone who opts to start life in a new place. This is what is addressed by Yan Li in the novel Lily in the Snow.
Yan Li is a professor at the Renison University College, where she teaches several subjects including history and literature based on the Chinese culture. She has dedicated quite a lot of her time and efforts, as well as much of her career, to create more awareness about her native Chinese culture. To this end, she has worked on various pieces of literature. Some of her other works, apart from the aforementioned Lily in the Snow, include Daughters of the Red Land as well as Red Duck Weed. She acknowledges the importance of a first-hand perspective and narration of Chinese stories rather than information from third parties (Renison University College, 2010). It is perhaps her first experiences that brought her into writing the Lily in The Snow.
Lily in the Snow looks at the socioeconomic and cultural challenges experienced by people when they move into a new environment. Through the eyes of Lily, a lot can be seen and noted about such experiences. Immigrants seem to be at a disadvantage right from the start of their lives in their new countries. One has to strive to fit in, integrate and then now survive (Li, 2009). There seems to be no easy way of going about it. Everything has to be achieved through struggle. Life for immigrants in Canada hasn’t been that easy as the country isn’t so welcoming, something that Hughes (2016) clearly acknowledges.
Lily has to work as a porter in a small company to make some money. While the job might be small, the working conditions make the entire work experience terrible. The employees usually had their bags and belongings checked every morning and evening as they left work, perhaps due to suspicion that they might steal from the business (Li, 2009). Poor working conditions aren't quite common in Canada. The underlying reason for this might perhaps be the fact that the company was dealing with immigrants. These individuals, to get any meaningful job, have to get the relevant Canadian certifications (C.B.S. News, 2018). Getting such certifications for a first-time immigrant might be tough, as it entails enrolling in Canadian institutions for further studies.
