Introduction
The story “Jeeves Takes Charge” is a story written by Wodehouse in 1919. The main story was set to be between the years of 1910 and 1920. During those times, Wodehouse’s technique of storytelling was deemed to be creative and exemplary particularly for his use of “slang, exaggeration and understatement, mixed metaphor, and literary reference” (Encyclopedia.com). Because of this countless authors through the years have emphasized and praised Wodehouse’s writings for its satirical nature, which presents the daily lives of Middle-class British during those times, in an entertaining yet critical manner. Particularly, I believe that one of the underlying themes of the story concerns the “boss-servant” relationship that exists between middle-class men and servants, particularly in a matter that concerns the “love”. Nonetheless, as he asked for the London registry to seek a replacement for Meadows, they sent Jeeves to Bertie’s employment. At first glance, Bertie has been surprised and satisfied with Jeeves’ ability to get things done efficiently and quietly, that even deemed him as a “genius” (Plumtopia). In order to further win Bertie’s approval, Jeeves did his best in order to win his master’s approval.
Nonetheless, as the two personas developed a close relationship with one another, Jeeves’ knack for meddling with his master’s love affairs has become more apparent. This instance happened with Bertie announced that he has recently been engaged to Lady Florence Craye. After this instance, a series of events that would lead from one instance to another would take place. Particularly, as Lady Florence and Bertie was starting to move on with their engagement, Florence has explicitly asked Bertie to have his Willoughby’s memoirs (Bertie’s uncle) to be destroyed. However, even if Bertie was initially opposed to it, he followed Florence’s commands and asked Jeeves to dispose of the manuscript, Jeeves sent it to the publisher instead. Because of this Bertie’s engagement with Lady Florence was then canceled and Jeeves’ was terminated from his employment because of his underhanded methods.
However, upon being rem...
