Literary Analysis Rosen's Duet for Bear and Dog Analysis
The tradeoff between civilization and ethics has always been one of the most commonly debated issues in literary pieces. On the one hand, some people believe that the never-ending quest for capital and technological progress at the expense of one's freedom is the best course of action for everyone. On the other hand, some would also say that having freedom from all the chaos brought about by a civilized world is much better. Accordingly, based on Rosen's work entitled Duet for Bear and Dog, I believe that she thinks that the price that we pay for civilization today is not too high.
The Need for Civilization
One of the reasons that show Rosen's belief that the price of civilization is not too high is because it helps us co-exist. It could be seen from the dialogue between the dog and bear that the former represents our civilized nature, whereas the latter shows our more instinctive and primal traits.
On the one hand, the dog represents the idea wherein we give up our liberty for the pursuit of our needs and luxuries in life in the civilized world even if it means our freedom from its constraints. One example of this could be seen at the dog's monologue that says "The one I belong to. Who belongs to me.
