August Wilson's Fences play is still one of the most captivating plays depicting the lives of African Americans in the 1950s. It was composed in 1983 and regarded as the most successful play of all time by August Wilson. It is part of Wilson's Pittsburg Cycle, which entails a collection of ten plays. They play are all about the lives of African Americans in different decades of the twentieth century. Fences' protagonist is named Troy, who was a former baseball athlete but now works as a garbage collector. Although Maxson seems to have many flaws in his life, he represents hope and an individual who is willing to fight for the rights of blacks due to the unfair treatment they had undergone in the past decades. Fences became a successful play due to August Wilson's storytelling ability and The struggles of African Americans in the United States in the 1950s.
August Wilson chooses the yard as his preferred location for the play. At the beginning of the play, he portrays a relationship between two friends, Troy and Borno, with Borno, the friend who has been pursuing friendship for over thirty years. Since he intends to portray Troy as a struggling individual, he presents the yard as a dilapidated yard with which he prides himself but also a source of a shame since it has an incomplete fence. "TROY and BONO enter the yard, engaged in conversation. TROY is fifty -three years old a large man with thick, heavy hands; it is this largeness that he strives to fill out and make an accommodation with" (Wilson 15). Wilson also indicates the struggles Troy undergoes by suggesting that he takes advantage of his brother's mental health condition as the only means of affording the house. Wilson makes the storyline more interesting by depicting the lives of two low-income employees who love having a long chat while drinking beer at the yard. Wilson's storytelling ability can, therefore, be seen in the way that he introduces the two characters, their behavior, and their preferred location for making conversations. At the same time, they partake beer on Friday evenings.
