Ewing (2006), points out that the prevailing notion of the Muslim women in Germany is that they are opposed and need to get away from their families to be liberated. It follows that women have to be liberated as they are the ‘other’ in need of being saved from oppressive cultures. However, in ‘Head On’ Cahit Tomruk is a widower who is unable to cope with loneliness and he results to taking drugs and alcohol. Ewing suggests that the depiction of Turkish-German Muslims in the media casts the men as always dominating women.
Sibel the major female character in Head on urges Tomruk to marry and improve her social status. This is surprising given that the western narrative is that women should be away from the Turkish Muslim societies for them to be liberated. Ewing (2006), argues that the immigrant families and their descendants negotiate inconsistencies in their unique ways depending on their worldview and their ability to negotiate. This is the case for Sibel who would be considered more liberal among the conservative Turkish community, but who also thinks that a marriage regardless is important to her identity even when it is loveless.
The notion that the Turkish-Germans have to rely on hybridity to be better integrated into the German society is simplistic. The call for hybridity as a path to integration also ignores the differences in perspective among the Muslim people from different generations (Ewing, 2006). Both Cahit and Sibel experience psychological problems, but there is still cultural pride.
