Describe your interpretation of Amanda Gorman’s message of hope.
The poem is a reminder to America that it has not yet reached its destination. As she starts the poem, she talks of there being a never-ending shade. This shade can be interpreted as the darkness or the flaws that can still be found in America today. There is widespread racism in America, inequality, underrepresentation of minorities, poverty, etc. All these issues show that there is still much left to do before America can be whole. However, Gorman’s poem speaks to these flaws noting that the country continues to persevere in ways that showcase its strength and character. She speaks to the fact that the country currently has grown to levels where African Americans or members of the minority communities can dream of being presidents. To Gorman, this is the message she is preaching; that the country will have room for everyone and where all cultures, colors, and characters can call home.
Also, I interpret her poem as a call to action to Americans all over the world. She cautions her audience that her message does not insinuate the destination as a utopia where everything is perfect. However, she speaks of a destination where everyone is proactive as they seek to mend fences, find common ground, and forge a united front. Her message screams unity and togetherness. It goes all the way back to history and offers a warning on the approach taken to handle or deal with past injustices.
