Throughout “Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” Sherman has clearly outlined the strategies that he used to overcome the struggles that he was going through at the time. The young man drew his strength from his father who had a similar interest in reading and writing. His success journey began when he started teaching himself how to read and write using the Superman comic book. Although he was not able to read what was in the book he used the images present to imagine the events that the author was talking about. With everyday practice, his skills in reading and writing advanced significantly as compared to his age mates.
Sherman’s achievements in that field did go well with several people his teachers included and there comes the theme of resilience. The young man was discriminated on several occasions simply because of his intelligence. Others on the hand failed to recognize his talent based on the fact that he was an Indian boy. Although the environment was not friendly for learning Sherman never gave up and he continued to improve his skills in reading and writing. Today his writing work has been appreciated by a huge number of people around the globe.
The theme of violence is also present in the book by Sherman. It clearly shows that the people lived in fear and they relied heavily on government’s aid. Violence results in instability and people are not able to work in an environment that is friendly. For that reason, people live in deplorable conditions. Sherman and his family were part of the group living in abject poverty. Through determination, he overcame all those struggles and he was able to live a better life.

Anne Fadiman, a renowned author takes a path that is not common especially to most writers. In “Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader,” Fadiman admits that it did not take her and her brother long before they became experts in reading and writing several articles. They were even able to come up with new words which they included in their list of vocabularies. Participating in the weekly TV show proved something to her and her brother.
