Bruise Injuries
Bruises are regarded as soft tissue injuries based on their damage of the skin and the soft tissues. Occurrence of bruises is characterized by damaged blood vessels under the skin which causes them to leak. There are many causes of bruises including one or more direct blows to various parts of the body, falls, or hard scratch of the body against a hard surface. Bruises are caused by the compression of the muscles and crushed between the skin surface and the object. After the internal blood injury caused by the bruising, there is pooling of blood under the skin which leads to discoloration on the bruised part (Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children Hospital of Chicago 1-2). The area that is bruised and the surrounding skin becomes tender to touch. In most cases it leads to hematoma which leads to swelling and a painful bump. Bruises do not lead to bleeding unless the skin breaks and the blood spills from the damaged blood vessels.
