Can Humans and Aliens Coexist? Issue analysis essay

Essay Instructions:

Paper II: Issue Analysis

Purpose and Description

Contributing to a scholarly conversation requires that you have something meaningful to communicate based on your own research. It also requires, however, that you consult existing scholarship on your subject in order to demonstrate, precisely, what is new or relevant about research findings. With these ends in mind, your aim in this assignment will be to 1) locate and analyze multiple scholarly sources related to the problem, question, and audience you identified in your research proposal; and 2) use your analysis to begin positioning yourself within a scholarly conversation that you would like to join based on your ongoing inquiry. The instructions described below are designed to guide you through this process.

While this paper, like the previous one relies heavily on rhetorical analysis, you will be much more focused on the topic for this paper, rather than the individual sources. Think of your sources as representatives of the whole of the conversation that is happening. You should be using them to determine the various stakeholders in this topic, how each side is presenting itself and their opposition, and note gaps or flaws in the conversation. Your thesis should focus on the nature of the issue itself but be supported by a rhetorical analysis of the sources you’ve acquired.

Invention & Inquiry

Consider the following as you develop the first draft of your paper:

  • Identify 3-5 key words related to your research problem and question;
  • Research the key words using appropriate university library databases;
  • Locate scholarly sources that examine problems and questions similar to your own;
  • Create a digital repository for the articles you find and can access through the library;
  • Select 4-5 sources that you would like to analyze for this particular assignment;
  • Analyze the sources using methods drawn from Chapters 2 & 3 in IAW;
  • Craft a thesis that defines some aspect about the scholarly conversation you have begun to define through your research.

The Composing Process

Your process for composing this paper will be similar to the work you completed for Paper I. In particular, you should introduce your subject, offer some context for your analysis and state your thesis, present your analysis, come to a general resolution that reinforces your thesis, and conclude the paper by pointing toward additional research that should or needs to be undertaken. Consider the following structure as you draft your paper:

  • Introduction (designed to frame your paper)
  • Research Context (designed to build on Exercise II)
  • Rhetorical Analysis (designed to draw from scholarly sources)
  • Resolution of Perspectives (designed to reinforce your thesis)
  • Conclusion & Directions (designed to gesture toward future action)

Specific Requirements

Your paper should:

  • Analyze the issue using 4-5 scholarly sources related to your inquiry (at least 2 must be new sources);
  • Develop a compelling thesis based on methodical analysis;
  • Have a well-defined and coherent organizational structure;
  • Be written in a clear, precise, and active prose style;
  • Cite sources correctly using MLA or an approved citation style;
  • Include a title that reflects the spirit and scope of your paper;
  • Be 1800-2100 words in length (double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12 point Garamond typeface);
  • Be uploaded to Canvas as a PDF or Word document by 11:59 PM on October 20, 2018

The process of defining a scholarly conversation does not end with the analysis of 3 to 5 sources. Rather, it begins with this step and continues to evolve as you focus your inquiry and develop your argument over time and through ongoing research and writing. Can Humans and Aliens Coexist?
Introduction
People watch movies about alien existence and contact between humanity and aliens and marvel at such storylines. The said storylines offer entertainment and a line of thought that has been fueled for a long time now. What if humanity discovers alien planets that are full of other civilizations? Would these discoveries be harmful or beneficial to humanity? What would be the effect of these discoveries on faith and diety? These are some of the questions that are yet to be answered, and at the moment, no one appears to have full or concrete answers. Looking at how humanity has responded to discovery of new lands and people, one may not be faulted to believe that contact between humankind and aliens will lead to colonization. Well, this can be a possibility because when civilized nations from Europe discovered life in other parts of the world, the first thing they thought about was colonizing and spreading their version of civilization to the other communities of the world. Drawing reference to the movie Avatar as well, colonization of aliens cannot be ruled out as a possibility. In the movie, humanity decides to invest in research and did discover life on another planet. However, after studying and developing contact with the alien planet, humanity decided to colonize the planet and advance its research. Does this mirror the reaction aliens will get once humanity makes contact with them? It is still unclear, but as seen from the movie and as history confirms, eventually, humanity finds ways to bridge the gap. The Europeans eventually found ways to co-exist with other races. But, it is crucial to note that these are speculations and that using one scenario to explain another can only offer so much. At the moment, everything being said about aliens is speculative because no one knows or has had any contact with an alien. So, at best, humanity can speculate and hope that its first encounter with aliens will be peaceful. However, with regard to what has been seen in the past, this article seeks to uphold and build on the notion that upon contact with aliens, humanity will seek to colonize and showcase its strength. But as indicated by Baum et al. (8) the case above is probable in the event of a “homogenous ETI, i.e., an ETI with one defining attribute or combination of attributes that dominates the encounter.” However, the can also be disputed especially when one considers the heterogeneity of the human race which is diversified in its “technological abilities, ethical views, national identities, and other attributes.”
Research Context
While discussing this topic, it is crucial to talk about the Fermi paradox. Fermi was an Italian physicist who asked one of the most talked-about question in the world. Having established that there are billions of stars and numerous galaxies in space, one cannot be faulted to ask the question Fermi asked: “Where is everybody?” As indicated by Mark (1), this question that was asked to Fermi’s partners while having lunch meant one thing only: “If the extraterrestrial civilization exists, why have we not met them till now?” At the time Fermi was askin...
