Introduction
This paper will explore how hip-hop has greatly influenced global fashion trends, art and film production. Understanding hip-hop evolution is essential in understanding how hip-hop culture has influenced fashion, art and film in recent years. Hip-hop genre came into being in the 1970s. Today, the number of hip-hop listeners has grown steadily, making it the most popular and influential genre of music worldwide. The table below demonstrates the huge number of hip-hop listeners across the United States as of 2021.
Hip-hop Influence on Fashion
Ever since its evolution, hip-hop has had a profound influence on the fashion industry. Some of the world's clothing brands have used hip-hop culture to make products that fit in well with the street culture and fashion trends put forth by hip-hop. Adidas was one of the companies to popularize hip-hop culture (Bug et al. 155). The company has been known for designing tracksuits and sneakers and their association with hip-hop culture. Popular hip-hop artists such as Run DM, Kanye West and LL Cool J were the first artists ever to wear tracksuits and sneakers and slowly, fashion started to be associated with the hip-hop genre. Tracksuits were considered suitable for professional performers and anyone who wanted to associate with the hip-hop genre; they are easy to wear and quite affordable for people to afford.
Another fashion trend associated with the hip-hop genre is the Hoodie. Even though the Hoodie existed before the evolution of hip-hop, it was never popular. It was only associated with a few blue-collar workers and athletes to keep them warm during regular exercise. Hip-hop artists popularized the Hoodie in the 1990s, who wore it to signify urban fashion trends and gang culture. Hip-hop artists in various gang groups wore hoodies to signify their rebellious nature. The hoodie fashion trend has evolved over the years and nowadays, it is only associated with urban trends and is worn by everybody regardless of their background. Additionally, oversized clothing such as baggy pants, T-shirts and Jerseys are trendy fashions associated with hip-hop culture. Jewelry such as bling and oversized clothing was popularized by hip artists such as Tupac and notorious B.I.G to signify their individuality.
Fashion designers such as Dapper Dan were instrumental in popularizing hip-hop culture in the fashion industry. His designs were popular among hip-hop artists. Brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Fendi often criticized his designs since they felt he was an able competitor at the time and that he used their logos (Reyes 33). However, in 2017 as social media became increasingly popular, Dapper Dan became much more popular. The same brands Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi have now collaborated with Dapper Dan in designing various men’s wear, tracksuits and accessories inspired by hip-hop fashion. His creativity and influence on hip-hop culture in fashion are finally being given well-deserved credit and recognized all over the world. This demonstrates how hip-hop culture's influence in the fashion industry has evolved over the years.
