The 18th and 19th century novelists revitalized literature with an intended attachment to feminist scholarship that was becoming a crucial aspect of discussion. The position that women take in society has consistently been subject of debate. The 18th and 19th century literature delved into this controversy especially through female gothic works. Daphne Du Maurier in the work Rebecca and Bluebeard by Charles Perrault stand among the works that explored elements of gothic literature extensively. This paper employs the two texts above to examine gothic conflicts through their principle sources and the impressions that they trigger. The comparative analysis of gothic elements in the two reads is vital in understanding the basic principles of gothic literature and the emotions that they trigger as readers explore the position of heroines/women in society.
Gothic literature is characterized by precise elements that define the intent of the authors. In an ideal gothic piece, mystery of women stays at the center of thematic expressions. The authors exploit mysteries and coded expressions to describe anxieties over domestic entrapment and female sexuality. Du Maurier’s Rebecca and Perrault Bluebird do not fail in addressing these key elements. In Rebecca prospects such as settings in high places, an atmosphere of suspense and mystery, omens, inexplicable events, and portents are explicitly portrayed. Perrault’S Bluebird mirrors the elements with enhanced insights into a heroine in distress and overwrought emotions. Albeit through varying lenses of mystery, the two works are an embodiment of struggles of heroines in societies structured to oppress women. Pursuance of love and expressions of feminism build from the heroine experiences leading to conflicts.
