Fredrick Douglass experienced brutal and harsh working conditions in the Baltimore shipyard. He was constantly and severely whipped at work. Considering he was unfamiliar with the work techniques and instruments, he would constantly make mistakes and be punished. He would also work for long hours serving various masters who did not care about his well-being or whether he was tired or not. The money he obtained from working so hard did not benefit him since his master used to take it all away.
