Released in 1987, Woman, Demon, Human is a famous Chinese movie directed by Huang Shuqin. The film was praised for its portrayal of feminist problems in China. It was probably the first Chinese movie that highlighted different issues of society in such a beautiful and impressive way. The story is based on the fictional life and career of a popular actress in Chinese opera. She is a woman who raises her voice against several traditions and goes against everyone who criticizes her for playing male roles. She is mainly criticized for playing the character of Zhang Kui, a benevolent ghost who has appeared in many Chinese operas. The actress becomes quite successful and earns a lot of money, but she has to struggle for her survival since she is shown to be going against an anti-female system. She lives an unhappy life and is often given tough times. The society we live in restricts women from living their lives according to their own terms but gives a freehand to men.
In Transgender Masquerading in Huang Shuqin’s Human, Woman, Demon, Zhang Nuanxin can be found saying that it has become difficult for females to secure their identity. However, this identity is evoked only during sex or when a woman has to develop a relationship with a male (Nuanxin 219). This is true to a great extent, as we can see many females getting success, fame, and money, but when it comes to preserving their own identities, they are not allowed or given permission by males of the society. The same idea has been presented in Woman, Demon, Human. This can be regarded as a semi-fictionalized biography of Hebei opera star Pei Yanling. She hailed as a national treasure of the Chinese operatic arts and was given a lot of chances to grow herself as an artist. However, she was kept from maintaining her own identity and was widely criticized for her portrayal of males.
