Earthquakes can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment. To start with, earthquakes can impact positively on the environment, through the development of a new habitat for flora and fauna. When a portion of the coastline breaks away from the mainland during an earthquake, it will carry with it the flora and fauna on this portion to a new place. Subsequently, these organisms will have to develop various adaptations to fit in the new environment, thereby resulting in a new and independent habitat (D’Amico, 2016).
Earthquakes also have negative impacts on the environment. The main one is the permanent destruction and alteration of a habitat. When an earthquake occurs, there is often the rapid shaking of the ground. This results in the collapse of caves, which usually act as the homes for many animals.
