The article provides an analysis of Wilde’s background information that made a significant contribution to the content of the book. As well, it gives an introduction to how the novel was received by society. According to the author, the revised version did not attract much negativity as compared to the first version. In response to people’s criticism, Wilde points out that he does not understand the notion of immorality that people claimed about the novel. The article also provides a list of the various characters and various essays analyzing the novel. Different themes evident in the novel have also been pointed out. Among them are morality, self-discovery, and the man’s dual nature.

According to this analysis, Dorian gives out his soul for eternal youth. Dorian realizes his beauty and allows his portrait to age while he remains young. The portrait changes drastically hence revealing his corruption and crimes, but his outward person remains flawless. The book points out that the new edition has been transformed to show how Wilde was in a position to transform his sources into a new idea of morality. He points out that the only way through which human beings avoid temptation is by submitting to it. Dorian ends up being captivated by his beauty, and Lord Henry's world tempts him into wanting to remain forever young. At some point, the character pledges his soul to stay forever young. The novel is a representation of the Victorian era, during which it was published. It is a critique of the Victorian ideas on morality.

In the preface of his book, Oscar argues out that "all art is quite useless" and beauty is the only good thing in art. The author of this article argues against Oscar's claim since the Picture of Dorian presents as a literally work, opposite from being useless. The book is a critique of Victorian ideas. During the novels, publications, various cultural and legislative moral reforms took place. Such reforms resulted in the upper-class Victorians separating their public and private lives to reflect morality in public while they acted immorally in closed doors. Therefore, Oscar mocks such a society through the use of Dorian's character. The painting is a contrast of Wilde's claim in the preface since it is a useful work of art.
