Realism refers to a literary technique that can be defined as verisimilitude or the actual representation of reality. In addition, it can be described as the period of American literature. The three characteristics of realism in “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane include attention to detail or verisimilitude, characters’ motivation by confusion, and the diction heightened by a matter-of-fact.
Crane uses diction in his work as the natural vernacular. He asserts that “A particular danger of the sea is the fact that after successfully getting through one wave, you discover that there is another behind it” (Crane 2). Here, Crane reveals how seawater can be rough, particularly due to large waves that can overturn the boat. Even anyone who has never been on a boat in the sea when there are strong waves can understand what Crane means. Even the captain was unable to assure the crew members that the boat will make it to the lighthouse since the end of a wave is marked by the beginning of another wave even larger than the previous one.
