Essay Instructions:

In the final exam essay, you should demonstrate your ability to analyze a text and to produce a grammatically correct, coherent, content-rich essay in response to it. . Like Paper 3, the final exam should be 700–1,000 words in length and follow MLA style.
Final exam topics, and therefore all essays written in response, refer to the reading selections contained in Chapter 16, "How Can We Bridge the Differences That Divide Us?" You are expected to make use of one or more of the following specific selections from this chapter:
Blanda, Sean. "The 'Other Side' Is Not Dumb" (212-218)
boyd, danah. "Why America Is Self-Segregating" (219)
Vance, J.D. Hillbilly Elegy (252-268) Length/Formatting: As an in-class essay, this paper does not have rigorous formatting requirements. You will type your essay and should be sure to distinguish between paragraphs. You should plan to write between 700-1000 words in length.
Citation Style: Be sure to cite your quotations using MLA style in-text citations. A References page is not required for this assignment due to time limitations.
Exclusions: You may not use ANY outside sources for this paper, including notes. You MAY use the text of the selected reading, The Write Stuff, and a dictionary/thesaurus.
Directions: Write a well-developed, thoughtful paper in response to one of the topics below. Pay particular attention to content and organization, including your introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. In order to achieve higher grades, display critical thinking in your argument and use of evidence as well as sophisticated use of language. Please refer to the Brenau Writing Rubric for more information on grading.
Reading Selections: All topics below, and therefore all essays written in response, should refer to the reading selections contained in Chapter 16, How Can We Bridge the Differences That Divide Us? , pp. 209-313. Although you may use any of the readings in this chapter, you are expected to focus on the following readings that have been discussed this semester:

Vance, J.D. Hillbilly Elegy (252-268)
Important Note: NO other outside sources are allowed for this paper. You MUST ONLY essays in our textbook for the final exam essay.
Topic:
Write an essay in which you assess the causes, effects, and/or solutions to the problem of "the differences that divide us." First, use at least one essay from those listed above (Blanda, boyd, or Vance) to evaluate and analyze the causes of the divisions between people in the United States. You may refer to additional essays or sources in the textbook if you choose, but your paper MUST analyze at least one essay from those listed above (Blanda, boyd, or Vance). Next, add your own "I Say" response to the problem -- what do you think are the effects of or solutions to the problem of the "differences that divide us"? You may use short, detailed personal experiences or quotations from writers in this section of the textbook as support for your "I Say" position.
Remember that your introduction paragraph should begin with a specific example, idea, or anecdote relevant to your topic; use the middle of your introduction paragraph to introduce the essays and authors and situation; end your introduction with a thesis statement that responds to the question above and answers it in detail.
Consider your body paragraphs an exploration of and development of your thesis statement; because you are analyzing texts, your body paragraphs should discuss details from the essays and analyze quotations from them.
End your paper with a conclusion that makes a final point.

Introduction
The U.S. is a diverse nation as a result of its immigrants. The nation is made up of diverse individuals. Being the free world, the U.S. should be a place where people can pursue their dreams. At the same time, one would expect that America allows individuals to express themselves in any manner they wish. However, this is not always the case since Americans continue to be divided on various issues. Such divisions threaten America’s position as a nation that values diverse opinions. The issue of division in the U.S. has adverse effects on the wellbeing of the people and needs immediate solution.
Causes of divisions
The Internet has been used to cause divisions among Americans. Technology enthusiasts initially thought that the Internet will be used to bring people together. They held that the Internet would be a powerful tool to connect people and assist in bridging divisions that initially existed in society. However, this has not been the case as “…the tools that were designed to bring people together are used by people to magnify divisions and undermine social solidarity” (Boyd 220). Tools like Facebook have been used to magnify social divisions. While Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook wanted to see a more connected world and hence a more united world, his company has achieved the opposite. The social media platform has been used to fuel hatred among users. It has been a tool for dividing people along with ethnic, religious, social and racial status, which contradicts the vision of the founder.
Additionally, private vendors, unlike the military are not concerned about promoting the ideology of desegregation. When recruits join the military, they are trained to know that their loves depend on their fellow soldiers. This creates the need for the recruits to embrace each other to survive on the battlefield. Such an approach enhances diversification since “…the military must wage war on prejudice” (Boyd 221). However, the private sector is not concerned with diversification. Instead, private vendors “…tend to hire and fire people based on their ability to work effectively as a team” (Boyd 223). These organizations are not bothered to invest in creating diverse teams that can work together.
