The setting of Death by Silver in 19th century London is a mystery fiction mainly focusing on the lives of Mathey a metaphysicist and Lynes a detective. In the Victorian age, London was expanding and in navigating the new locations, the writers then explore a utopian image of the emerging role of London as the heartbeat of England. The choice of London as the setting for the story is revealing as Scott and Griswold seek to explore the world of metaphysics and gay relations in the Victorian age, in the city even when homosexuals were punished by law for going against the norms of decency and morality. The setting of Death by silver, in the city of London during the late nineteenth century contributes to the development of a romantic relationship between the two protagonists.
Ned Mathey and Julian Lynes became lovers as they worked together to unravel who was responsible for the death of Edgar Nevett (Scott & Griswold 2). They grow close together and their detective work is successful when they encounter mysterious characters in the London criminal world. In an age where the sodomites were shunned by the world, the two protagonists encounter criminality and homosexuality away from the mainstream society. Scott and Griswold, then challenges the assumption that homosexuality did not exist in the Victorian era and Renaissance period. Even as there were laws sanctioning moral and penalized gay activities, Death by Silver highlight that there was reluctance to go after people involve in private homosexual activities.
As a thriving city during the 19th century, London was going through rapid changes in the social structure and on the economic front. With growing inequality in the city, the criminal underground grew, while the laws policing people grew stricter. It is no coincidence that those in gay relations had to hide this from the society. In the criminal underworld that is mainly represented, they can engage in whatever activities without the fear of being judged by the society. The protagonists are closer to each other in the urban settings where there are fewer people judging them and trying to police their behaviour.
